Two separate interviews. (1) Gives a detailed account of the Salem family history; Abdul and Ida Salem and their children Godfrey, Mooren and Albert. Describes details of his brother Albert's football career with Kingsthorpe Wanderers and other local teams. Gives an account of various family members and their occupations and social life from the late 1890s to 2000s. Outlines the family's Indian background and connections. Remembers local tension because his family came from India. Gives an account of the housing situation in the 1920s and the family's eviction by the council. Recalls his sister's service in the Land Army and Albert's service in the Second World War. (2) In the main interview Godfrey Salem was basing his comments on his father’s military career on research findings available at that time. Since then it has been established that Abdul Salem, after originally joining the Bengal Lancers at the age of 14, as a drummer boy and served with them during the First World War (not the Cheshire Regiment as previously thought). Abdul did not enlist in the Cheshire Regiment until March or April 1919. He was in the Cheshire Regiment for a year and 40 weeks. |
