Race 2 Score
In July 2006, pupils from Kingsthorpe Community College and Unity College Northampton performed a play entitled “Black or White, who cares... it’s just a colour”. The performance was a culmination of a year long project involving students from Northampton Secondary schools. The project, Race 2 Score, encouraged students to learn about the diverse history of Northamptonshire and create a performance dealing with the issues surrounding racism in a lively and accessible way.
Students attended various workshops relating to black history, local history, world history, drama and football. As well as this, pupils visited the Imperial War Museum, a Premiership Football Club and Northamptonshire Record Office. The Race 2 Score initiative provided pupils with the opportunity to explore racism and its effects using sport and drama and also allowed pupils to develop their understanding of 21st Century Britain and discover the history of Black people’s contribution to society.
The project also worked with a group of students from Corby who were part of the Springboard initiative.
The Northamptonshire Black History Project was partnered in this project with Northampton Town Football Club and the Local Education Authority.
Rehearsals for the performance in 2007 is funded by the Northamptonshire High Sheriffs’ Initiative.
Race 2 Score was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund – Young Roots fund.
